The Nobelle Story

I have been working with German shorthairs for some 37 years.  We are proud of the fact that our Nobelle dogs have become the foundation dogs to so many kennels throughout the United States!  While we have been at this quite a long time, I would like to acknowledge the fact that without Clyde and Marilyn Vetter of Sharp Shooters Kennels we would not have had the success with this fine breed!  It was Clyde that initially placed Belle with me, without Belle there would be not be a NO-Belle-Kennel.  Clyde and Marilyn are without question a very large part of the success I have enjoyed! Clyde and Marilyn were also open to the breeding between Hawkeyes Westfork B n B, (Belle) and INT CH, VC Shooting Starr’s Sharp Shooter MH, which are truly the beginnings of the Nobelle part of our journey. This pairing between Shooter and Belle produced the first Nobelle named litter. Nobelles Double Trouble Dott MH is a product of that breeding, as was INT CH, VC Nobelles Holy Tera MH, (owned by Clyde and Marilyn). Nobelles Double Trouble Dott is the foundation dog behind what has been a wonderful journey spanning many many years!   We bred Dott again to another Sharp Shooter dog VC Sharp Shooters-Me-Oh-My-Ty MH. This paring produced Nobelles Jenny. So from the bottom of my heart I want to thank both Clyde and Marilyn for their participation in the creation of the Nobelle line of shorthairs.

Thank you both!

This journey has brought many people into our lives that we otherwise would have never met. The thrill of hearing someone call me when his or her pup has matured busting with pride for me is icing on the cake!

Breeding a litter if one is going to do it right is not a matter of convenience but one of much time contemplating why a particular pairing is the correct one to go forward with. Many times I have at the last minute after many hours of second-guessing myself decided to switch off to another stud dog. Never once have I regretted making the switch.  I do as much homework as possible to ensure that a breeding that I do is the best possible breeding I could put together.

First and foremost we are not a kennel. We do not have pups on demand, nor will we ever!  There are no chain link fences with dogs in kennels. If we do breed  it is always our intent to produce puppies that can compete on any level and in any situation, our goal in breeding is and will always be to produce puppies that will grow into dogs that will become loving members of your family. We work hard and contnue to work hard to establish the reputation that we have achieved.  Successful breedings are more than just the joining of two adult dogs.  It takes hard work, dedication as well as experience over many years to continually prodcue the results we are known for. No one knows a Nobelle dog nor thier ancestors like we do! Do not be fooled by ads that look like ours or that read like ours. The proof of breeding takes gererations to prove themselves!

Our puppies will have all the natural ability, desire and cooperation to hunt for you all day. When the hunting is over they will also be content to hang around with you and your family in the home.

The thought process that goes into our breeding program begins years in advance of the pairing. After some 30 years of involvement with this breed we sort of have an idea of past, present and future pedigrees we are interested in!

Our dogs are not kennel dogs, they are family members. We do not have any kennels on the property! Our pups are whelped in the home never in an outside kennel! From the time the puppies are born they are handled on a daily basis. Not only do we handle the puppies daily we also condition them to both a whistle and loud noises at feeding time.  We will guarantee that you will come away with a healthy stable puppy that will give you years and years of love and devotion!

As you can see from this picture taken in the back woods of Maine, our dogs are judged in the field under actual wild hunting situations! This brother and sister combination were just three years old when this picture was taken!
Our passion for the breed began in 1971 out of my love for upland bird hunting. The passion for pointing dogs grew from my love of upland bird hunting.

First and foremost we enjoy being in the great outdoors enjoying our dogs.  Like you we do not spend hours upon hours per day or week in the fields training. We train between, soccer games, football games, lacrosse and dance. Oh yes and someplace in there I own a business which takes up much of my time as well. The pictures you will see on this website are of dogs that went to homes to become not only hunting partners but additions to one's family. I would have it no other way!

We are very dedicated to the breed producing puppies that in the field will amaze you with their bird finding ability. Our pups live across the United States and are hunted on every species of upland birds known !  In the home a Nobelle dog is calm and content.

It is our philosophy that for most of you, better than 90 percent of your pups life will be spent in the home therefore our dogs must have a love for people as well as other dogs. They must be of sound temperament to enable them to co-exist in a household where they are loved by your children as well as your children's friends. Little fingers may poke them, or little arms may place a choke hold on them yet their temperaments must be such that they either just stand there and take the love,or simply walk away. They must be intelligent and easily trained. They have to be cooperative coupled with the
personality to take to training. The other 10% while they are in the field bird hunting they must productive and cooperative producing birds for the gun.

Our breeding program produces puppies that are natural in every sense of the word coupled with desire and cooperation.

Over the past decade Nobelles shorthairs by
percentage has produced an outstanding ratio of NAVHDA Natural Ability Breeders Awards, Utility Breeder's Awards, NAVHDA Versatile Champions and AKC Master Hunting Titles.  While we encourage our puppy buyers to get involved and test their dogs,  the  testing of dogs is not why we breed. Testing  alone can not and should not determine one's successes. The performance of our dogs in actual hunting conditions is our benchmark!  Our sucess are determined in the field in actual hunting conditions!

Our puppies stretch across the country hunting wild game from the north woods of New England in pursuit of grouse and woodcock, the upper peninsula of Michigan hunting both wood cock and duck, to the vast open spaces in the Dakotas in pursuit of the wiley pheasant, down south hunting the elusive bob white quail to the shores of New Jersey hunting woodcock and geese.

We have consistently demonstrated our ability to produce puppies that are representative of  what the breed was intended to do.  If consistency over the entire litter is a benchmark of success then we have done our job. If there is one word to describe our breeding program it is “consistency”. Every puppy we have ever kept was chosen not by me but by my children, how is that for believing in consistency.

Our  puppies known for:

  • Bold intelligent pups that are early developers.
  • Prey drive coupled with cooperation and sound temperaments.
  • Calm lovable members of the family yet in the field possess tremendous bird finding ability.
  • Intense natural pointers with strong retrieving instincts.
  • Natural backers with lots of style and intensity
  • Nice range naturally checking back
Excellent conformation with plenty of bone

Our Objective

Our thought process is a long-range plan. Our standards are the ultimate objectives on how we judge ourselves!. It is our desire to produce, over a period of years, a strain of shorthairs that will consistently fill these standards--a strain that will produce true to type generation after generation. Our puppies mature early and are extremely cooperative. They have an inherent desire to find birds for you in the field, and at home they are calm, cooperative companions.

We blend the best German/American bloodlines to produce dogs that are easily handled yet possess tremendous natural abilities. It is always our goal to produce puppies that are calm, cooperative, coupled with tremendous desire and intelligence. Our standards are to breed only those dogs proven in the field under actual hunting conditions, as well as from generations of proven tested dogs.

Our puppies are whelped in our home. They are well adjusted, well socialized. We start with a sound breeding program and breeding plan. Our pedigrees demonstrate generations of tried and true dogs ensuring truly versatile puppies.
