Our Puppies
The process begins with the painstaking selection of our stud dog choice. That choice is based on many factors and
years of experience. We are looking to the future and the type of dog we would want in our home and as our
hunting partner be it in the fields or blinds. Once we have selected our stud dog,(which is a relief) we will communicate
to you via email as to the breeding and then when we anticipate the puppies being whelped. After the whelp we wil once again
communicate via email as to the size and the sexes of the litter.
While the litter
is being whelped each puppy is dried, warmed and then weighed. A notation is done on each puppy( not literally on the
puppy) as to their weights and their birthing order. Once the whelping is done we are at
the vet with Mama to make certain she is healthy! The puppies are weighed daily
to ensure they are getting enough nourishment. Two to three days after the whelp the entire litter is off to the vets to have
their tails docked and dew claws removed. We carefully wrap our carry box on all sides to maintain warmth within the
box and eliminate any cold air to reach the puppies.
For the first three days the
puppies are left to nurse. They are whelped in seperate room where we maintain a constant temperature for the puppies
which is free of drafts. We spend countless hours those first fee days marveling at the litter. We always find ourselves
counting the litter each time we enter or leave the room. Why we do this I have no idea as we have never lost a puppy yet!
From three days on the puppies are handled through out the day. Sure we stimulate
the puppies this way, getting them used to human touch, and mild stress but we mostly do it because the puppies are so darn
cute! At about three weeks of age we begin to wean the litter. Feeding initially
is about four times a day with the pups still getting mother's milk. Upon entering the room we will whistle until we
place the food dish down. We do this at all feedings until the pup leaves to go to their new home. We also start
with light tapping while feeding. The tapping progresses louder and louder until we can bang on the whelping
box with the pups not caringin the least. By the time our pups leave you should see them come running as we whistle! By the
way once they are on solid foods , let the games begin!
Each of our puppies are raised
in a loving family enviornment. The whelping box which is a stainless steel custome made design and the puppies
are kept as clean as humanily possible. The amount of baby whipes we go through is staggering. We go through so many 50 gallon
contractor bags on a daily basis that the sanitation people know their Christmas bonus just came early!
By the time our pups are ready to go out they will have their first round of shots as well as
worming. Each new buyer will leave with:
A health certificate from our
veterinarian which will also indicate the innoculations
All of the various registration papers will be ready to be filled out so you can leave with them
A suggested feeding schedule, etc
Oh and on occassion a few tears may be shed as each puppy leaves
